Fighting for Pontiac on the Oakland County Commission

Angela Powell is a fighter for Pontiac. She has spent her life and career fighting for the people of Pontiac. Angela takes her role as a community activist seriously and is a highly-regarded advocate for the people.

Angela’s career reflects her dedication to Pontiac and our values. She works for Pontiac’s State Representative Tim Greimel as his Constituent Services Coordinator, and has been on his staff for years. Every day, she is actively helping make the lives of Pontiac residents better. She previously worked in the Michigan House of Representatives as a Community Organizer and was Community and Political Director at the Oakland County Democratic Party; she was the first African American woman to hold that position.

Born and raised in Pontiac, Angela Powell knows our community. She grew up in a large and loving family, raised by her hardworking parents Abram and Joyce Powell. Both of her parents are deaf and have overcome great adversity; Angela knows firsthand the challenges that Oakland County families face, especially those families dealing with disabilities. She is fluent in American Sign Language and continues to advocate for residents who face barriers to access. Angela is known for her hard work and dedication as a great mother to her daughter Makayla. She also knows that if it wasn’t for God and the great mentors he has planted in her life she would not be the woman she is today.

Angela attended Oakland University, where she attained her Bachelor of Arts degree in English. While at Oakland University she worked for the Greater Pontiac Community Coalition (GPCC) and this is where her career in public service began. Working here she was able to work with local elected officials in the city of Pontiac and served as the liaison between different grassroots organizations and programs affiliated with GPCC. She worked on many different community initiatives there, including the Committee of Fifty and Governor Jennifer Granholm’s coordinated campaign committee, just to name a few.

Angela is deeply connected to worthy causes in our community. In addition, to her busy schedule she has in the past served as an Assistant Coach for years in the Girls Basketball Program at Pontiac Northern High School, which is now Pontiac High School. With this program she served as an Assistant Coach, program Administrator, and mentor. She is Secretary for the Alexander Home for Boys Inc., and Team Administrator of Quest Cheer and Dance LLC. She has recently begun serving on the Oakland County Sheriff Police Athletic League (PAL) board.

Angela is an active and committed Democrat. In addition to her career working for Democratic leaders and the Oakland County Democratic Party, she has been on the ground working to advance our party and our principles. She currently serves as Treasurer of the Pontiac Democratic Club, and previously led the Pontiac Democratic Club as Chair. She is an elected Democratic Party Precinct Delegate in Pontiac, and Second Vice President for the “Mighty” 14th Congressional District Democrats.
